Winter tires

When should I put my winter tires on in Ottawa or Toronto?

Updated · 2 min read

Short answer

Put your winter tires on once daytime temperatures are staying at or below 7°C, which in Ottawa is usually late October to early November and in the GTA a week or two later. Don't wait for the first snow: that is when everyone else calls too.

The 7 degree rule

All-season and summer tires are made from rubber that stiffens as it gets cold. Below about 7°C it stops gripping the road the way it was designed to, even when the road is completely dry. Winter tires use a softer compound that stays flexible well below freezing, plus deeper treads and thousands of small cuts called sipes that bite into snow and slush.

That is why the usual advice is temperature, not snow: once the daytime high is regularly at or below 7°C, your all-seasons are already giving up grip.

What that means in Ottawa and the GTA

  • Ottawa: highs usually settle below 7°C from late October into early November. Most of our Ottawa customers book their winter swap between the last week of October and mid November.
  • Toronto and the GTA: the lake keeps things a little milder, so the same point tends to come a week or two later.
  • Collingwood and Wasaga Beach: snow belt weather off Georgian Bay can arrive early. Book on the earlier side.

Gatineau and the Quebec deadline

If your car is registered in Quebec, winter tires are required by law from December 1 to March 15. Ottawa drivers who commute into Gatineau are not covered by that law, but the roads are the same roads.

Why booking early matters

The first snowfall of the year is the busiest week of the season for every tire shop and mobile service in the city. Booking a few weeks ahead means you get a time that suits you, in your own driveway, instead of a waitlist. With an on-rim swap it takes about 30 minutes per car.

How to tell a real winter tire

Look for the three-peak mountain snowflake symbol on the sidewall. "M+S" (mud and snow) on its own does not mean a winter tire, and it does not count for Quebec's law or for an Ontario insurance discount.

When to take them off

The same rule works in reverse. Once spring highs are staying above 7°C, usually mid April in Ottawa, swap back so your winter tires last more seasons. If you don't have room for the off-season set, we can store them for you.

Common follow-up questions

Are winter tires mandatory in Ontario?

No. Winter tires are not required by law in Ontario, but Ontario insurers must offer a discount to drivers who use them, so they usually save you money as well as stopping distance.

Are winter tires mandatory in Quebec?

Yes. In Quebec, passenger vehicles must have winter tires from December 1 to March 15. If you live in Gatineau or drive there regularly from Ottawa, that date is a hard deadline.

Can I put winter tires on too early?

A week or two of mild weather will not hurt them, but winter rubber wears faster on warm, dry roads. Aim for when the daily highs have settled at 7°C or below rather than the first cold morning in September.
